WE INVITE YOU TO COME AND BE PART
OF THE MCAULEY FAMILY

HISTORY OF THE SISTERS OF MERCY

Catherine McAuley was the founder of the Sisters of Mercy.
A homeless shelter was started for women and children on the “Feast of Our Lady Mercy” on the
24th of September 1824 in Dublin, Ireland. The Sisters of Mercy dedicated themselves to
serve the poor and become known around the world.

In 1898 the Sisters of Mercy came to South Africa. In 1907 the Sisters of Mercy began teaching
in Braamfontein. They were first called the Convent of Mercy, then Parktown West Convent,
then McAuley House.

In 1962 plans for McAuley House opened with bigger and better facilities at its present site.
The Sisters of Mercy have 16 schools, adult education and homeless centres run by the Mercy Sisters
in South Africa. The offical opening of the McAuley House school was in October 1964.

OUR VALUES

We have a strong Catholic ethos but welcome and respect learners of all faiths. Religious knowlegde and
spiritual growth form an important part of our educational process. All learners attend religion classes.
The seasons of the Church Calendar are taught and celebrated as a school family. Classes are encouraged
to be involved in community outreach as our concern goes beyond ourselves.

We Live Our Faith through:
Honesty, Integrity, Humility, Responsibility, Commitment, Reliability and a willingness to serve.

OUR DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE

– To continue to strive to provide an education of excellence on a happy and safe environment.

– To continue to extend and diversify our extramural sports programme even further.

– To further encourage our students to find expression through arts.

– To create an even greater awareness of the neglected and marginalised in the community and engender a sense of responsibilty for the environment.
